Our
Approach
At Sisu Outdoor School, we believe childhood belongs outside.
Supported by experienced, attentive educators, children at Sisu grow into capable, resilient, and compassionate humans - deeply connected to nature and to one another.
Mission & Philosophy
● Sisu - Rooted in Trust
Trust in children, trust in nature, and trust in the learning that unfolds when both are given time and space.
Inspired by the Finnish concept of sisu, or quiet courage and resilience, we believe childhood is not something to rush, but something to be lived fully outdoors.
● Flexibility breeds Growth
Children learn through play, movement, and exploration, guided by curiosity and the changing seasons rather than a rigid curriculum. Our days are shaped by the land we explore and the interests of the children, allowing learning to unfold naturally through climbing, building, wondering, and imagining.
● Confidence thru Experience
Outdoor learning naturally involves risk, and we take a thoughtful, risk-aware approach. Teachers carefully assess environments, set clear boundaries, and remain closely present, while encouraging children to listen to their bodies, try things thoughtfully, and grow confidence through experience.
● Consistency & Connection
Consistency and relationship are at the heart of our days. Familiar rhythms, shared meals, and long stretches of play help children feel safe and grounded, while strong relationships foster belonging and care. By spending time in the same outdoor spaces across seasons, children develop a deep connection to place, respect for wildlife, and a sense of responsibility for the world around them.
